Cabot is seeking a talented engineer to join as a Sr. Process R&D Engineer in the Advanced Carbons team. Our product is a best-in-class conductive carbon nanomaterial, that has a range of applications including plastic composites and batteries. Carbon Nanostructures (CNS) are produced in a unique roll-to-roll process with significant opportunity for innovative technology development to improve production efficiency and scale up, increase sustainability, and new product development. This role will be in Billerica, MA, Cabot's primary R&D facility and support commissioning and initial operations of new production facilities.

How You Will Make an Impact

In this role, you will be an independent process engineer responsible for development of next generation process technology for enhanced productivity and product quality as well as enhancing the sustainability profile of the production process. You will work with our operations and product/process development teams to lead projects of moderate to high complexity/scope. As the business grows you will pick up increasing responsibilities around the expansion and start up of new production facilities working with our global engineering and manufacturing teams.

A successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Conducts independent research to understand and deliver solutions to technical and commercial problems in equipment or process design and research investigations. Sets hypotheses and devises technical approaches to complex problems. Employs thorough scientific approach, including understanding of literature, mechanistic thinking, hypothesis setting, experimentation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Supports existing and future operations by participating in troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develops new process equipment and works with various vendors and service providers to advance research on increasing capital efficiency and productivity of operations. Contributes to the design of novel parts and assemblies to facilitate development of equipment and machines.
  • Plans, schedules, conducts, or and coordinates detailed phases of projects of varying scopes to safely meet objectives and timelines. Generates data, conducts advanced statistical analysis, and organizes and interprets data to establish and support new process, materials, and/or application learning. Conducts tests, draws conclusions, advances hypotheses, and makes recommendations.
What You Will Bring to Cabot
  • Post-secondary degree (Bachelor's/University) in Chemical Engineering and generally 10+ years of related experience, Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering and generally 6+ years of related experience, OR Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering generally with 2+ years related experience.
  • Process engineering and scale up experience, preferably in the areas of high temperature reaction engineering, catalytic processes, fluidized bed or chemical vapor deposition technologies. Experience with pilot and/or commercial scale equipment and/or continuous fiber management processes is a plus.
  • Technical Excellence. Advanced knowledge and understanding in chemical engineering. Knowledge of instruments and controls and programming. Familiar with mechanical equipment and their operation. Experience with Labview, CAD and mechanical design a plus.
  • Ability to connect between scientific disciplines. Ability to independently execute in a manner that is aligned with IP and business strategies. Ability to synthesize and document experimental results in written reports to capture knowledge.
  • Knowledge and effectiveness in the critical aspects of project management.
  • Communication & Presentation Skills. Ability to effectively engage in verbal and written communications.
  • Works Safely. Strictly follows and complies with all SH&E procedures, standards and regulations and constantly strives for Excellence in the fields of sustainability and Safety, Health, and preservation of the Environment. Familiar with topics such as Process Safety Management (PSM), safe work permitting, lockout/tagout, emergency response, and hazard recognition.
