The primary function of this position is to provide direct patient care and support duties to the patients of the Department of Internal Medicine Ambulatory Care Facilities.

Examples of Duties

Direct Patient Care 90%
1.Assists with the flow and movement of patients in the clinic and communicating with providersand nursing staff to improve efficiency of clinic workflow. Responsible for keeping the providerexam rooms full.
2.Take patient vital signs, document in electronic health record and communicate findings withmedical providers.
3.Completes patient history information as needed.
4.This position will provide assistance and support to medical providers and other nursing staffduring procedure clinics within the Department of Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics.Responsible for set up for the various procedures and assisting residents and faculty at thebedside during the procedure.
5.Responsible for assisting providers and faculty in various specialty clinics within the Departmentof Internal Medicine.
6.Responsible for the oversight maintenance of clean, well-equipped and supplied exam rooms,assembles clean and sterile packs for special procedures, and maintains clean and sterileequipment. Responsible for maintaining the procedure rooms in working order, includingstocking and reporting inventory needs to nurse leaders.
7.Responsible for post-procedure patient education in collaboration with the medical provider.
8. Assist with monitoring medical equipment and devices such as EKG machines, oxygen delivery devices and supplies, AED machines, ultrasound equipment and other related procedure equipment as directed.
9. Employees with certification will perform EKG tracings as requested by medical providers.
10. Relay results of diagnostic test, explains medical instructions to patients when indicated by the physician.
11. Collects specimens from patients using standard medical procedures and complete requested point of care testing as ordered by the medical provider.
12. Cleans and sterilizes instruments according to policy; record sterilizer test results and keep necessary logs.
13. Cleans and disinfects medical instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards, prepares and sterilizes examination rooms.
14. Responsible to see patients in nurse-only clinics under direct physician supervision for protocol-driven patient care such as blood sugar checks, blood pressure checks, etc., and documents same in the electronic health record.
15. Responsible for assisting assigned faculty and residents with electronic health record desktop report and paper reports, i.e., labs, x-rays, and consultation results.
16. Assists with the coordination of referrals with hospitals and participating specialists, instituting correct preparations for accurate continuum of care and documenting same in the electronic health record.
17. Responsible for inventory of medical supplies on the clinic floor and communicate inventory needs to the nurse leaders.
18. Provides guidance and training as needed for new team members.
19. Willingness to float between areas as need arises.
20. Travels to satellite locations, as assigned.
21. Other duties as assigned by the RN or Charge Nurse.
Scheduling/Reception 10%
1. Schedule patient appointments.
2. Receives and welcomes patients into the clinic.
3. Obtain demographic and billing information and enters into the computer.
4. Accesses computer terminal to input, update, and retrieve and review patient demographic and billing data for new and established patients.
5. Creates initial medical record for new patients and reviews new patient information.
6. Obtains patient's signature on authorization forms.
7. Generates daily schedules, prints encounter forms and demographic information.
8. Ensures charge tickets are completed and physician, demographic and billing information is accurate.
9. Scans patient insurance cards for indexing into the electronic health record.
10. Assists with running chart summaries for patients out of the EHR.
11. Assists with indexing patient link medical, social and family histories into the EHR.
12. Handles patient complaints according to established policies.

Qualifications

  1. High school graduation or equivalent.
  2. Any one or any combination totaling six (6 months) from the following categories:
    1. Six (6 months) of work experience in direct patient care in a healthcare setting or equivalent.
    2. College course work in a related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent.
      • 30 semester hours equals six (6 months)
