Position: Machine Shop Supervisor


Under the direction of the VP of Operations, the Machine Shop Supervisor ensures the timely production of parts at the highest quality, meeting customer specifications and delivery requirements. The Machine Shop Supervisor oversees the department to ensure machines are set up, working properly, and that operators are producing parts that conform with company quality, quantity, and efficiency standards.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Act as a technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems; analyze and resolve machining problems as needed.
  • Assist in the planning to meet production schedules.
    • Review root cause of parts delays along with the Production Control Manager with a goal of being proactive with regards to production delays; adjust schedules as necessary.
  • Participate in weekly production and supervisor meetings, recommending schedule adjustments as necessary.
    • Communicate issues related to conformance to production schedule.
  • Expertise in operating numerically controlled machine tools to perform a complex series of progressive machining operations.
  • Knowledge of complex machine set-ups and critical operations; making suggestions for process and efficiency improvements
  • Knowledge of interpreting blueprint specifications and following up with the Engineering Department on any discrepancies.
  • Expertise in understanding program formats involving combination of operations such as profile and contour milling, boring, recessing, turning, drilling, threading, etc. to the capacity of the machine and control factor. Be able to trouble shoot when issues arise.
  • Assist when needed to measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures and make recommendations when adjustments need to be made.
  • Periodically evaluate processes and methods, recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment, performance, utilization of people, and quality of product.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement departmental policies and procedures, processes, and methods as needed.
  • Provide regular feedback and annual performance reviews to staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of machining and programming.
  • Ability to follow interpret and advise/provide direction on written instructions, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Ability to lead a team.
  • Tactical leadership experience required.
  • Requires a broad knowledge of machining techniques and familiarity with computer numerically controlled machine tool operating procedures along with programming experience.
  • Ability to determine whether machinery is working properly based on specifications for expectations such as cutting speeds.
  • Ability to make recommendations on efficiency and process improvement.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/vocational school diploma highly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a machine operator required.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisor experience in a machine shop with proven leadership skills required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to work in noisy environments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, carrying and moving parts, materials, and product. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to bend, stretch, squat, and climb to access all parts of the machine.
