Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Equipment Manager position. The Assistant Equipment Manager is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $21.35/hour - commensurate with experience. The Assistant Equipment Manager supports the efforts of the Equipment Manager in providing the Department of Athletics and the campus community as a whole with excellent service. This position will assist the Manager with the operations of the equipment room for all 27 NCAA Division III varsity sports programs, as well as the needs of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who use the room. The Assistant takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Inventory/Equipment/Laundry
  • Maintain inventory of all equipment and uniforms for varsity sports teams as well as equipment used by students, faculty, and staff (squash/tennis rackets, basketballs, soccer balls, etc.).
  • Clean, replace, and repair uniforms and equipment necessary to maintain the highest quality, safety, and longevity.
  • Assist the Manager in managing all laundry for assigned teams and department needs. - Meet current safety standards for laundry equipment (environmental, chemical, and infectious diseases); - Maintain washers and dryers for efficient short and long-term use; - Ensure proper ordering, procedures, and handling of chemicals approved by Amherst College Environmental Safety Department.
  • Issue and manage athletic lockers in men's general, women's general, coaches, faculty, officials, and team locker rooms. Maintain spreadsheets to organize individuals in over 800 lockers in order to track names, contact information, and combination locks.
  • Consult with coaches in order to properly fit, issue, set up locker rooms, and create standards of operation prior to each season.


Operations
  • Assist daily with shipping and receiving of packages, and maintain records to properly charge teams/individuals for outgoing shipments.
  • Receive shipments for hard and soft goods. performs an inspection to confirm products and quantities ordered are present and ensure products are not damaged and document all information as needed. Approve invoice payment.
  • Liaise directly with the Business Manager on invoices, purchase orders, and other billing-related issues.
  • Evaluate and recommend the replacement of athletic uniforms, team-issued gear, and equipment needs. Assist the director with end-of-year inventory reviews.
  • Manage student billing at end of each semester for unreturned/missing/damaged items.


Game Management
  • Work with game managers, coaches, and facility personnel for all athletic events.
  • Attend meetings establishing NESCAC, NCAA regular season, and post-season policies and procedures for athletic events.
  • Continue education and knowledge of all applicable college, departmental, NESCAC, and NCAA governing rules to make sure all equipment meets the standards set for fair and equal play.
  • Setup for events which include scoreboard (functionality), public address systems, team room and event signage, team and official's locker room assignments, event vehicles, visiting team equipment and personnel transportation, water, sideline equipment and visiting team laundry.


Supervision
  • Hire and assign student workers to perform tasks with the daily operations of the equipment rooms, night laundry, and athletic events.
  • Set schedules to ensure all shifts and requirements are filled for efficient operations and functionality.


Qualifications

Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license and successful credentialing is required to drive college vehicles
  • One year of related experience
  • Knowledge of sporting activities and business acumen
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated customer service, time management, problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Flexible schedule in order to support department events and activities
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical


Preferred:
  • Associate's degree
